Today we’d like to introduce you to Char Goetz.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in rural Pennsylvania where I learned to appreciate worn, timeless treasures, which has now become such an important part of who I am. My grandmother and mother both dreamed up food, clothing, furniture, and home décor out of items that most people would never take a second look at. This instilled in me an appreciation and love for the unusual, the imperfect, and the story behind the object. As both an antique dealer and founder of a successful outdoor vintage market, I had the privilege of meeting so many interesting, inspiring customers and vendors from around the world.

Many of them expressed the same desire I had for an upscale, design-centric indoor vintage market in Southern California. So, with the support of this amazing community, I created the Flying Miz Daisy Vintage Market and “flew” off to the Hangar building at the OC Fair & Event Center. Part of my brand as always included my 1952 vintage trailer, “Daisy”. She comes with me to every event where shoppers can hang out, share nostalgic stories, and take photos with her.

Has it been a smooth road?
Yes and no, when you create a business that you love and are extremely passionate about, it never feels like a job or an obligation; it feels like a creative outlet, and the people involved become your family. Developing this market has been so beautiful in so many ways, but owning a business is never smooth sailing all the time! I’m a firm believer that there is space for everyone to pursue their dreams; and we will only ever rise by lifting others up. What I found early on as a woman in business, is that sometimes there are folks that are not as supportive, authentic or forthright as you hope they will be. That has been my biggest struggle; I try to stay true to this ideal in all situations, but that can be difficult when you are faced with others who don’t necessarily share that same outlook. My advice to anyone starting their own venture is this; love and support as many people as you can, but know that there are times when you must simply send people love from afar, because it’s no longer positive for you to try and support them in your day-to-day, and that’s okay. Focus your energy, time, and resources on those who embrace you, and simply send everyone else on their own journey!

I would definitely have to say that letting go of successful, well established, outdoor flea market that I created and was deeply invested in was difficult but I knew I had to walk away from a relationship that was no longer positive for me or for those around me and create something on my own from a place of love, a sense of community, and a commitment to authenticity. As Buddha said, “In the end, only three things matter: how much you loved, how gently you lived, and how gracefully you let go of the things not meant for you.”

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Flying Miz Daisy is, above all, a family. Our vintage market is a community that welcomes those who seek a different kind of relationship with the goods that surround them. We’re a family that is built on the pillars of authenticity, open-mindedness, craftsmanship, and kinship. We support each other in our endeavors, cheer each other on, and always help a friend in need. We help people to find their place, to create a home and life that inspires them daily, and we have as many laughs as we can along the way. I so value the diverse perspectives and endless connection this business provides my vendors, our customers, and myself.

What customers will experience at Flying Miz Daisy is the ability to converse with the exhibitor, to use all their senses when shopping, to learn the rich history of each piece that has been carefully curated, collected, and restored to find its way to them. It is a shopping experience unlike any other- not just a market, but a social experience, a chance to explore your tastes and learn about others’, and a place to truly feel at home. “No Barcodes Allowed” at Flying Miz Daisy!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes! In fact I’m working on bringing my market to LA and the surrounding areas as we speak. I got married and started a family in LA. I love the people, the culture, it’s where history began on the West Coast. Where can you visit the mountains and the ocean in the same day!
